St. Patrick was originally a mission of St. Joseph's Church that was founded in Woods Hole in 1889 by Fr. Cornelius McSweeney. St. Patrick's Church on Main St. in Falmouth was dedicated in 1911 by Bishop Daniel Feehan.
As the number of Catholics in the area increased, Fr. Thomas Kennedy, then-pastor of St. Joseph's, leased the property known as Harbor View Park, and transformed a ballroom into St. Thomas Chapel. The first Mass was celebrated on July 4, 1918. The property was purchased in 1921 and St. Thomas was designated a full parish in 1928, with St. Patrick its mission. However in 1931, St. Patrick became the parish church and St.. Thomas its mission!
St. Patrick' Parish continued to grow and expand to meet the needs of the growing Catholic community. In 1949, the building was renovated and enlarged, nearly doubling the seating capacity. The interior of the church has oaken fixtures: the main altar is carved in oak, as are the crucifx, candlesticks and the imported Tyrlean statues of the Blessed Mother and Sacred Heart of Jesus.
In 1991, further renovations of the church and parish offices took place. A new stained glass window was installed behind the altar, dedicated to Our Lady of St. Patrick.
In July 2021, St. Patrick united with the other parishes in Falmouth to create a new parish, St. Joseph, Guardian of the Holy Family.
